Rolliskate driveway protection boards are thick HDPE (high-density polyethylene) pads placed under the dumpster rails on every Neighborly Hauling delivery. HDPE is softer than concrete and asphalt, distributes the bin’s weight across a larger surface area, and prevents the metal rails from ever contacting your driveway directly — at no extra charge.
Driveway Protection · Grand Rapids & West MichiganDumpsters are heavy — several thousand pounds before anything goes in them. Most haulers drop bins straight onto asphalt or concrete, or slide wood scraps underneath. Neighborly Hauling uses a better system on every single delivery: HDPE Rolliskate boards, placed under the bin’s rails so steel never touches your driveway.
What Are Rolliskate Boards?
Rolliskate™ HDPE Protection
Thick HDPE boards — not wood, not bare metal
Made from high-density polyethylene — the same industrial-grade material used in cutting boards and heavy outdoor equipment.
- Softer than concrete and asphalt — won’t gouge
- Doesn’t absorb moisture or rot like wood
- Won’t splinter or crack under load
- Stays in position during placement
- Weatherproof — works in any season
HDPE vs. Wood — Why It Matters
Many dumpster companies use 2×6 boards or broken lumber scraps to “protect” your driveway. Wood creates its own set of problems:
| Wood Boards (typical) | Rolliskate™ HDPE ✓ NH | |
|---|---|---|
| Under pressure | Splits and cracks under the bin’s weight | Handles thousands of lbs without deforming ✓ |
| Surface contact | Traps grit that scratches pavement on removal | Smooth underside — no grit trapped, no scratching ✓ |
| Moisture | Absorbs water, swells, grows mold | Fully moisture-resistant — no absorption, no rot ✓ |
| Stability | Slides when the bin is lowered — inconsistent | Stays in position during placement and pickup ✓ |
| Longevity | Breaks down, leaves stains and splinters | Durable across hundreds of uses, no degradation ✓ |
| Hot weather | No weight distribution — point loads on soft asphalt | Distributes weight to prevent indentations in hot asphalt ✓ |
| Cost to renter | Typically extra or not offered | Included on every delivery — no extra charge ✓ |
How It Works on Delivery
Boards placed before the bin touches down
The hook-lift system lets the driver hover the bin just above the surface while boards are positioned — the bin never contacts the driveway at any point.
- Rear boards placed as the bin descends to ground level
- Front boards set before the bin fully lowers
- Bin rests entirely on HDPE — zero steel-to-driveway contact
- Same process in reverse on pickup day
Spreading load across the surface, not concentrating it
A dumpster’s rails are narrow — without boards, all that weight bears down on a small contact point. HDPE boards spread that load across a larger footprint, reducing pounds-per-square-inch dramatically.
- Reduces PSI on the driveway surface significantly
- Prevents indentations in soft asphalt during hot Michigan summers
- Absorbs vibration as the bin is lowered and raised
- Creates a stable, level base even on slightly uneven surfaces
Protection on Every Surface Type
Concrete
HDPE keeps metal rails from scratching or chipping the surface. Smooth underside means no grit is trapped between the board and the slab on removal.
Asphalt
Asphalt softens in summer heat. Weight distribution prevents rail indentations. HDPE is softer than asphalt, so it won’t gouge under load.
Lawn / Gravel
We prefer hard surfaces for placement. If a lawn drop is needed, boards reduce sinking and prevent rails from cutting into turf. Note: wet soil still risks truck tire impressions.
Common Questions
What are Rolliskate driveway protection boards?
Rolliskate boards are thick HDPE (high-density polyethylene) pads placed under the dumpster’s rails on every Neighborly Hauling delivery. HDPE is softer than concrete and asphalt, distributes the bin’s weight across a larger surface area, and prevents the steel bin rails from ever directly contacting your driveway.
Does driveway protection cost extra?
No. Rolliskate HDPE boards are included on every Neighborly Hauling delivery at no additional charge. You never need to request them — they’re standard on every drop.
Will a dumpster damage my concrete or asphalt driveway?
Not with Neighborly Hauling’s delivery process. HDPE boards prevent direct metal-to-driveway contact, distribute weight to reduce PSI on the surface, and the hook-lift system means the bin is lowered rather than dragged. On asphalt in hot weather, the boards prevent rail indentations that would otherwise occur from point loading. See the full delivery process →
Why don’t other dumpster companies use HDPE protection?
HDPE pads cost more than scrap wood and require investment and maintenance. Most haulers use 2×6 lumber scraps when they use anything at all — wood that splits under load, traps grit, absorbs moisture, and slides during placement. Neighborly Hauling chose HDPE because it consistently protects customer driveways without the failures wood creates.
Can a dumpster be placed on my lawn?
We prefer hard surface placement — driveways, streets, and compacted gravel areas. If a lawn placement is requested, Rolliskate boards reduce sinking and prevent rails from cutting into turf. However, the truck’s weight during delivery can leave tire impressions in soft or wet soil, which the boards cannot fully prevent. We’ll advise on the best placement option when you book.
