Can I put paint in a dumpster in Grand Rapids?
Wet paint — latex, oil-based, stains, or sealers — cannot go in a dumpster. Dried paint in cans with the lids removed is accepted. To dispose of leftover latex paint, mix in kitty litter or sawdust until fully solid, then it can go in the bin. For larger quantities of liquid paint, Kent County SafeChem accepts it free of charge.
Can I put batteries in a dumpster rental?
No. All batteries — from AA alkaline to car batteries to lithium-ion — are prohibited from dumpsters in Kent County. They’re a leading cause of transfer station fires. Take them to a Kent County SafeChem drop-off location or any hardware store with a battery recycling program.
Can I put motor oil or gasoline in a dumpster?
No. Motor oil, gasoline, diesel, and all other fuel products are strictly prohibited. They’re flammable, they contaminate other loads, and they can leak through seams onto driveways and pavement. Kent County SafeChem accepts used motor oil and fuel at no charge. AutoZone and O’Reilly Auto Parts also accept used motor oil.
What happens if I put a prohibited item in my dumpster?
A debris mismatch or contamination fee may apply at pickup, depending on what was placed and the level of remediation needed. For liquid contamination (oil, paint, chemicals), cleanup can require degreaser, pressure washing, and extended turnaround time — costs that pass back to the renter. Can I put concrete in a dumpster rental?
