roll-off dumpster positioned on residential driveway Grand Rapids Michigan

Neighborly Hauling dumpster pickup follows 8 steps: you receive a scheduled window, an SMS with live tracking when the driver departs, the truck squares up to the bin, the driver performs a safety inspection including door and load checks, photos are taken, Rolliskate boards protect the driveway during the lift, the bin is secured to the truck, and the load is tarped before leaving as required by Michigan law.

Pickup Process · Grand Rapids & West Michigan

When your project is done and your dumpster is ready for removal, Neighborly Hauling follows the same careful, safety-focused process on pickup as on delivery. Here’s exactly what happens — step by step.

Before pickup day — what to do on your end

Close and latch the rear door — an open door can swing during lift and damage your property

Keep load at or below the top rail — overfilled bins cannot be legally tarped or picked up

Clear the approach — move vehicles blocking the street or driveway in front of the bin

No prohibited items — verify no batteries, paint, fuel, or hazmat was added since delivery

The 8-Step Pickup Process

1

Your scheduled pickup window

At booking

Pickup is scheduled with a target window — for example, 1 PM–4 PM. This gives you time to secure the area, close the bin door, and confirm the site is ready for removal without waiting all day.

If you need a tighter window for contractor access or property scheduling, note it when booking and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

2

“On our way” text with live tracking

Day of pickup

When the driver departs for your pickup, you receive an automated SMS with a live ETA and real-time tracking link — the same system used on delivery day. You can follow the truck’s progress from your phone and make sure the area is ready.

SMS only used for order updates. You won’t receive any marketing messages — only delivery and pickup notifications you opted into.

3

The square-up — aligning for a controlled lift

On arrival

On arrival, the driver aligns the truck straight with the bin — the square-up. Backing in straight ensures a controlled, centered hook connection and a clean lift without pulling the bin sideways.

⚠️ The bin door must be fully closed and latched before pickup. An open door can swing during the lift and damage your house, vehicles, or landscaping — and may result in a delayed pickup or a return trip fee.
4

Safety walk-around and bin inspection

Before hooking

Before hooking the bin, the driver performs a full walk-around. This protects both the customer and Neighborly Hauling.

  • Checks door safety pin and chain are secure
  • Inspects the bin for damage or unusual wear
  • Reviews the load — contents, level, any prohibited materials
  • Records any pre-existing damage with photos

If the load contains prohibited items or is overfilled, the driver will contact you before proceeding rather than forcing a pickup that creates liability.

5

Photo documentation — property and bin condition

Pre-lift

Just as on delivery, the driver photographs the site before touching the bin. This documents the driveway condition, load level, and bin status — creating a clear record that protects both parties if any question arises after pickup.

  • Driveway and placement area condition
  • Load level and visible contents
  • Bin condition at time of pickup
  • Rolliskate board placement before removal
6

Rolliskates stay under the bin through the lift

Driveway protected

The HDPE Rolliskate boards remain under the bin’s rails throughout the lift — they don’t come out until the bin is clear of the driveway. This ensures the rails never drag or scrape the surface during removal.

  • Boards stay in place until bin fully clears the surface
  • No steel-to-driveway contact during the lift
  • Driver collects and stows the boards once the bin is secured on the truck

Your driveway looks the same after pickup as before delivery. That’s the point.

7

Final lift — bin secured to the truck

Hook-lift precision

With the inspection complete and photos taken, the driver carefully lifts the bin onto the truck rails using the hook-lift system. Once secured:

  • Rolliskate boards collected and stowed
  • Final safety check — nothing protruding or unsecured
  • Bin confirmed locked onto the truck frame
  • Driveway cleared and clean
8

Tarping the load — required by Michigan law

Legal requirement

Every Neighborly Hauling load is tarped before leaving the neighborhood. Michigan law requires all dumpster loads to be covered during transport.

If the driveway or placement area is tight, the driver may pull forward to the street where overhead clearance allows the tarp arms to deploy fully — then tarp before entering traffic.

  • Protects neighboring vehicles from debris
  • Keeps your load from scattering on the highway
  • Required for compliance with state transportation law
  • Why overfilled bins delay pickup — a tarp can’t cover a load above the top rail

Common Questions

Do I need to be home for dumpster pickup?

Not necessarily — as long as the bin door is closed and latched, the load is below the top rail, the approach is clear, and there are no prohibited items. SMS tracking lets you follow the pickup remotely. If anything prevents pickup (overfilled bin, blocked access, open door), the driver will contact you before leaving.

What happens if the bin door is left open at pickup?

An open or unlatched door can swing freely during the lift and strike your house, vehicle, fence, or landscaping. Pickup may be delayed until the door is secured, and if a return trip is required, a fee may apply. Always close and latch the rear door before the scheduled pickup window.

What if my dumpster is overfilled at pickup?

If debris extends above the top rail, the load cannot be legally tarped under Michigan law. Pickup will be delayed until the load is reduced below the top rail. A return trip fee may apply if the driver cannot complete pickup on the scheduled visit. See the max load level guide →

Will the pickup process damage my driveway?

No. HDPE Rolliskate boards stay under the bin’s rails throughout the entire lift — they don’t come out until the bin clears the surface. The hook-lift system means the bin is lifted, not dragged. Your driveway should look identical before and after pickup.

Why does the truck sometimes tarp on the street rather than the driveway?

The tarp system requires overhead clearance for the arms to deploy properly. Many residential driveways have trees, overhangs, or overhead wires that prevent safe tarp deployment. The driver will pull to the street where there is clear overhead space, then tarp the load before entering traffic. The end result is the same — a fully covered, legally compliant load.
